Why did you choose to work in philanthropy?
My strong commitment and passion to work in the Jewish community began after volunteering for a year in Israel, on Project Otzma. After that life changing experience, my trajectory changed. I knew that I had to work with and on behalf of the Jewish people. Period. It’s where I fit in and where my heart is. Whether working at a Federation, a Jewish Community Center, or now at the Foundation, my goal was and still remains that I want to make a difference.
How does working in philanthropy impact you personally?
I feel happy, grateful and humbled. Happy as I get up every morning, knowing that I get to work with amazing family members, staff and Grant Partners. Grateful that I am part of impactful, meaningful work in the local, national, and international Jewish community. Humbled because as much as we can do to engage, support and uplift the Jewish community, there is so much more work to be done.
What do you admire most about your Grant Partners?
Our Grant Partners intensely believe in what they’re doing. They care deeply about their work, their organization’s mission, and the people and programs they impact. They all work tirelessly on behalf of the Jewish people as they support, engage, teach, empower, and inspire others. They too are here to make a difference.
What advice would you give someone interested in philanthropy?
When you truly care about the people and the mission, know that your work becomes a part of you. This work enters your heart, your soul … and doesn’t leave at 5 pm. At the Foundation, we care about our Family members, Committees, Board of Trustees, Grant Partners, and all those who are impacted by the programs we have funded or are funding. We are a strong team working together. If you are interested in philanthropy or working in the Jewish community, first take time think about yourself and your “whys.” Why are you drawn to the work? What is your mission? What are your professional goals? Then take time to learn about the specific foundation. What’s their mission, what are their goals? What do they believe in? What programs do they / don’t they support? Research staff and their experience. Learn about the work culture, and if you think it would be a good fit.
