The fight against blight is well underway in Brightmoor, with members of the family on hand for a press release celebrating the efforts of Foundation grant partner Detroit Land Bank Authority (DLBA). Peter Cummings, Amanda Fisher, Andrew Sherman and David Sherman were joined by a host of notable guests, including Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, Detroit City Councilman James Tate, Gompers Elementary School Principal Bobbie Posey-Milner, Pastor Larry Simmons and DLBA leadership.
The press conference celebrated the $500,000 commitment by the Foundation and a generous $100,000 gift from Ajax Paving. This partnership represents an unprecedented effort across various entities, from for-impact organizations, private corporations and public officials. “This tremendous gift from the Fisher Foundation and Ajax Paving signals a strong belief in our blight removal strategy,” said Mayor Mike Duggan. “It sets a great example for how the private sector and philanthropic communities can aid in the rebuilding of our neighborhoods.”
Nineteen structures are being targeted in this latest effort. Brightmoor resident input has proven to be essential to the selection and identification of vacant buildings in their neighborhood.
As directed by residents and community leaders, the majority of the demolition efforts will focus on the blocks adjacent to Gompers Elementary. Since 2014, more than 200 structures have been demolished in Brightmoor.
Blight, and its startling impacts on children’s well-being, have become an increasing focus of the Foundation’s grantmaking. Over the summer, former and current staff, former interns, and family members joined together for a morning of service with Motor City Blight Busters.
